Is Ratemyprofessor.com actually accurate?

Have you ever noticed how most people will go out of their way to tell someone that they’re doing a bad job, but not when they are particularly good? Where do we begin seeing this… Google reviews, Yelp, Ebay, Amazon, and (probably most prominent for college students) Rate My Professor.com.

I must admit, due to the fact that most of my classes were major restricted, I didn’t have much wiggle room to choose teachers based on smashing reviews on ratemyprofessor. I also admit I had several fears of taking a class with professors this term, who had low stats and online comments. But having gotten through the first week of classes, I can’t help but notice that all these low rated teachers simply have more aggressive work ethics and ideas than other PSU professors. This does not mean that they are bad teachers; instead, I’ve come to the conclusion that these teachers’ work ethics have scared students who are not used to working at such a fast rate.  Indeed, I’m having homework flung at me at a faster rate, but guess what? I feel myself actually learning.

I take a four-hour class every Thursday evening, and I have never been more awake in my life. My laptop is riddled with pages of notes, but I am somehow retaining it all in my head somewhere. Maybe this is a good sign in terms of finally choosing the correct major for me, but in all honesty, these teachers are incredibly knowledgeable, and I respect their passion and admiration of their subjects.

Hopefully other students won’t shy away from these “low rated” classes simply because teachers have a low rating on a website. Again, people are willing to give more bad news than good news. Be cautious, be honest, and don’t be scared of taking on a challenge. You might surprise yourself.

I too wondered if RateMyProfessor.com was accurate; however, my professor proved to me that it wasn’t when she explained to my class how she manipulates her own scores and the scores of her colleague friends. Check out the post I wrote about it! http://simulatedstimulation.wordpress.com/2013/01/27/ratemyselfprofessor-com/

How I see it, RateMyProfessor.com is inaccurate. On the other hand, it worked out for me in most cases. Most of the time when I choose a good and high rating professor, I would get that kind of professor. I observe to see how well the professor teaches. I honestly don’t think that low rated professors are bad, rather, it’s just a generalization of what reflect upon their teaching to the students and personality wise (sometimes). For instance, professors could be kind and nice, but could really suck at teaching and organization. While other professors could be strict and mean, but great at teaching and organization. I believe those nagative feedback to professors just implies that students, themselves, are using that source as an excuse as a disagreement of their own predicament and failure. Of course, the situation varies widely. My point is, the rating could either be written honestly from students that had “that” professor, or as sespain said, being manipulated by lies from professors (not just professors, but many other people that loves to tamper with informations). In conclusion, even if RateMyProfessor.com is inaccurate, I would still use it because it does help, compare to choosing teacher at random is much more risky. If there was a better and more secure site that has professor rating with honesty and accurate information, I would use it. Unfortunately, we live in a world of lies.
