Have you ever wanted to help out at a soup kitchen? There’s no better time than Thanksgiving. Portland has plenty of places to lend a hand near our campus. Pick up the phone and call a local food bank to see how you can help. Soup kitchens are in need of assistance in other areas besides food service. You can offer to pick up donations, do inventories, set up tables, or help clean up.
However, if you’re looking for a fun activity that will also benefit others, you might want to head to Big Al’s Bowling Alley this weekend (Nov. 11-13). Each time you bowl three strikes in a row, a.k.a. “a turkey”, Big Al’s will donate a turkey to CityTeam Ministries, a food box program that helps low-income families. You can also get your shoe rentals free if you bring canned food to donate.
Whether you choose to help at a soup kitchen or bowl away for a turkey donation, it is a great way to help those in need. I encourage PSU students to keep to our school motto and “Let knowledge serve the city” by giving back to the community. Take your friends, have some fun, and make it a tradition to help out during the holiday season.
